On March 28th, 2025, Cornelius Emase hosted an info session about open source (Fedora) at Muranga university of technology. The event focused on introducing students to Fedora, open source contribution paths, and community building.
-
Impact factors that contributed to its success:

Partnered with university faculty to secure a venue and promote the event

Provided actionable next steps (community links, Fedora Magazine articles, and Quick Docs)
-
Designed a future engagement plan (virtual contribution workshop)
-
-
What Worked Well:
-
Collaborating with local institutions improved credibility and turnout
-
Leveraging personal contributor stories helped attendees connect with Fedora
-
The session increased participant confidence on open source
-
Localized communication ensured better understanding and inclusivity

Build pathways for the community: Beyond events
To truly support contributors from marginalized regions, DEI events must connect attendees to long-term opportunities and the possible ways we can retain them:
-
Industry connections and job pipelines
-
Global-local mentorships
-
Training and skill-building follow-ups
-
Fedora swag and material support
-
Inclusion in Fedora working groups and decision spaces
