Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team

Team logo for the Fedora DEI Team. A round

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team encourages, supports, and enables DEI in the Fedora community. We work with the community to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to be a part of and contribute to the Fedora Project. DEI Resources page has valuable information for someone looking to learn more on the topic.

“Inclusion isn’t just about being respectful - it’s about making sure people from everywhere feel like they belong and have what they need to contribute.”

While the Fedora Project is open to contributions from everyone, our community stands strong on pillars of mutual respect, tolerance, and encouragement. Please review the Fedora Code of Conduct for more information.

Vision

The Fedora community empowers contributors from diverse backgrounds to speak up, participate, and lead. The DEI Team supports Fedora contributors in making inclusive spaces, both as active contributors including others or as new contributors making their start in the Fedora community.

Mission

The Fedora DEI Team empowers diverse Fedora contributors by organizing events that celebrate Fedora community members and by partnering with DEI communities in Fedora to sustain safe and inclusive spaces for connections. Through events and DEI communities in Fedora, the Fedora DEI Team is also a bridge to other open source communities and the larger FOSS ecosystem.

What we do

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team organizes and supports various initiatives to foster inclusion, equity, and empowerment across the Fedora community. Our current focus is building regional capacity, supporting contributors from underrepresented areas, and making it easier for local communities to thrive.

Events

We host several recurring events that celebrate diversity, support mentorship, and recognize contributors from all backgrounds:

  • Fedora Week of Diversity (FWD): Each year, we celebrate the contributions and stories of Fedora contributors from diverse backgrounds. This event highlights personal journeys, showcases community achievements, and helps connect contributors globally and locally.

  • Fedora Mentor Summit (FMS): An annual event for Fedora community members interested in mentorship. The summit features talks, discussions, and activities where mentors, mentees, and curious contributors connect, share experiences, and explore how mentorship strengthens Fedora and open source communities.

  • Fedora Appreciation Week (FAW) A week-long event dedicated to recognizing the work and impact of Fedora contributors. FAW encourages gratitude, storytelling, and public recognition of individual and team efforts across the project.

Regional Community Development

We collaborate with contributors to establish and grow Fedora communities in underrepresented regions, including Africa, Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific. This includes offering mentorship, resources, and guidance to help local organizers start Fedora meetups, events, and advocacy programs.

Cross-Community Outreach

We act as a bridge between Fedora and broader open source diversity efforts. By collaborating with other projects and communities, we share best practices and amplify impact beyond Fedora.

We track ongoing work and opportunities to get involved through our GitLab issue tracker. If you have ideas or want to propose a new initiative, we encourage you to open an issue or connect with us.

Where to find Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team uses the following communication platforms:

The Discourse forum is best for asynchronous communication. This means it is best for questions or topics that someone may respond to later. It is better for longer, threaded discussions.

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team Matrix room is best for synchronous communication. This means it is best for quick feedback, like a conversation. It is helpful for real-time discussions or getting someone’s attention more quickly.

Meetings

The Fedora Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team holds bi-weekly meetings (i.e. two meetings a month) to review on-going work and determine next steps on current work. It is a good opportunity to say hello and meet other members of the team in real-time while seeing how we work. One meeting a month is an audio/video meeting on Google Meet and one meeting a month is a text meeting hosted in Matrix.

If you are interested in attending or chairing our meetings, see the meeting guide for more information.
